Document Summary

Final discussion board due december 9th on blackboard. Borders of african countries were drawn by european colonists. This broke up the tribes that were already in africa when this happened. Africa has islam, christian, and spiritual religions running through it. This includes living and dead ancestors (despite any organized religion that"s being forced upon them, they believe their ancestors are always with them) Kente cloth - physical analogy for polyrhythm and how all the rhythms come together. Density reference - one rhythm that everyone follows (usually played with an agogo bell, Akan and other indigenous languages shaker) (like the ching ) Master drummer keeps everyone going and inspires new rhythms throughout the group and excites onlookers. Example: atumpan (double drum with one tuned high and one tuned low) The actual drum sounds are another language. Almost more like spoken word poetry than drumming. Same rhythm throughout, but it"s a complex rhythm.
