Case study: lyme disease- 1977 in connecticut a bunch of young children had symptoms of arthritis; was linked to bacterial pathogen; spread by ticks, and after you were bitten, a bullseye rash appears and then u systems. They pick up the pathogen when larvae and eating mice, birds, and small mammals. Abundance is in uenced by host abundance, habitat for eggs/nymph/larvae, climate (temp, rainfall. Understanding outbreaks in the disease requires a connection to the ecology of the system. Lyme"s disease outbreaks are most likely in suburban areas. Host is more present in small forest patch. Species interaction between mice and oak trees is good predictor of disease outbreak. Masking- release tons of acorns/nuts at one time; saturates those that eat the nuts so that trees will grow. A collection of data leads to good conceptual models. Historically nature was studied by people like mendel, darwin, and naturalists.
