EDL 204 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Nel Noddings, Feminist Epistemology
Document Summary
Need to have consistent and coherent ontologies and epistemologies. Education is the art and practice of building relationships. Philosophy begins with what is right, using reason. Ethics begins with what is moral, using ethical principles. Ethical decisions should still be consistent and coherent. Must evolve from: your ontology and epistemology. How we shape teaching (pedagogy) around our ethics) is what relational pedagogy means. Ethic of care is one example of relational pedagogy. Math teacher and mother of 10 children. From studies on moral development: men tend to base their ethical decisions on principles of rights, law and justice, women tend to base their ethical decisions on how they would impact relationships. Ethic of care= caring relationship: it is a relationship, not a virtue, not a one-way action. If a relationship has the 3 characteristics it is caring regardless. The end goal is the same; the means are different: natural motivation/emotion, ethical, rational motivation.
