In 1970: less than 28% of us adults: 2010: 44% of us adults, today: 109 million unmarried adults, most (63%) have never been married, growing proportion of never marrieds. In 1970 36% of women (20-24) never married. In 2010- 89: higher due to men marrying at higher ages than women. Racial/ethnic group differences: 27% white adults vs. 47% black adults. Gender differences: 25% asian women, 35% asian men. Economic factors: women: education and career opportunities, men: decline in earning potential. Technology: contraceptives adults can have sex without having babies push off marriage. In 1910 106 men for every 100 women: 2010 97 men for every 100 women. Cultural changes: singlehood is viewed as more acceptable option, nonmarital sex is more accepted, cohabitation is also more accepted, marriage is not the only way to gain adult status, marriage is seen as less permanent.
