GLG 121 Lecture Notes - Lecture 11: Non-Renewable Resource, Gasification, Sea Level Rise
Document Summary
Co2 is the most important ghg because : it is the most abundant, we emit more co2 than any other ghg, it can have a long atmospheric lifetime. Two kinds of climate change: anthropogenic. This is what people assume we are talking about when we say climate change: natural. How the earth rotates around the sun. Circular or oval path around sun (eccentricity) Accounts for most of natural climate change. Solar flares increase the brightness of the sun. Solar cycles have gone down while temperature still increased. Volcanic ash actually reflects the sun"s radiation, which cools the planet: sulfate aerosols. Ghg emitted by volcanoes in recent years is insignificant compared to human generated ghgs. How do we know all of this: past evidence from ice cores (up to 800,000 years) because there was no ice for a period of time before then, carbon dioxide, gas bubbles trapped in frozen ice.
