Are between the trenches, no man land. Large numbers of soldiers died in shell craters deep in the mud and water. Their fellow soldiers couldn"t help them without risking their lives because crossfire was so heavy. In 1959, one of the mines went off in the middle of a belgian cornfield. None gained a huge amount of ground. The battle of the somme: july-november 1916. Volunteer army was ready to launch its attack. This one battle was going to end the war because of the quality of the volunteer soldiers(cream of the crop) and it was going to be followed by the largest artillery battle. About (cid:1151) of a million killed in each battle, (cid:1152) of a million wounded during each battle. Efforts to find a shortcut or technical solution to break the trench stalemate. First attempt: 1915: use of poison gas(first used by the germans) Poison gas: tricky because you depended on the winds to carry it.
