Hitler’s other aims
Trade union
Organized a coup against trade unions
SS and Gestapo cracked down on them and decreed the
dissolution of all unions not under Nazi control
Workers didn’t fight back
They were promised jobs, cars, and special vacations
These promises were only meant for some workers
3 things that escaped Hitler’s control
The presidency: could dismiss Hitler as chancellor
Hitler wanted to occupy this position, so no one could dismiss him
Army
It was a state within a state
The Army generals refused to allow Hitler any influence over them
The SA
Followed a separate policy created by Rohm
He had separate goals that conflicted with Hitler’s and therefore needed to
be eliminated
Army generals hated Rohm and did not want to merge the SA and
German army
Hitler needed to control Rohm, so that he had a chance at the presidency
Rohm vs. Hitler
Hitler offered Rphm a chance to commit suicide, but he refused and said Hitler
needed to kill him himself
SS then shot Rohm
Night of the Long Knives
When Hindenburg passed away:
Hitler was appointed head of state by the army generals
He had accomplished his goal of the presidency
Gained control of SA and German Army
Allowed Himmler to build up SS
Created 2 fully armed units to prevent coups against Hitler
Changed the institutional oath of allegiance to a personal oath of
allegiance to Him
