Banana republic: developing latin american country that"s dependent on limited agriculture or a single cash crop (typically, bananas, coffee) and ruled by a corrupt government. Example: in guatemala, there was a central intelligence agency backed coup because the government was a threat to the united fruit corporation"s interests.
