The greater the missing element, the greater the need, and therefore the greater the motivation, and thus the better action : something that makes a character act is based on something missing or not yet attained ! Characters can commit evil based on a strong positive motive : example: you have an antagonist who is terrorist and hijacks an airliner! A weak writer just makes the terrorist evil, glossing over the reasons why ! A strong writer nds why he wants to do it / what has happened to him to make him think that that hijacking the plane was the right thing to do : medea ! All well-written characters think their action is the right or only thing to do even when they"re doing something horrible ! Aristotle speaks of character aw as an error , defect in judgment !
