Some viral infections cause direct damage but in many viral diseases signs and symptoms of disease are from indirect damage. Repeated round of viral reproduction and host cell damage/death. Ends only when the host immune system eliminates the viruses or the host organism dies. Viruses cause disease in the host but are not completely destroyed by host defenses and instead remain in the host in an inactive state termed latency. Latent viruses can reactivate causing diseases again o. Some viruses remain active in host cells for months or years slowly causing increasing amounts of damage o o. Viral genetic material inserted into the host dna-> provirus o. Provirus remains in host dna permanently leave cells & infect new cells. Cancer occurs when cell division gets out of control, leading to an accumulation of unnecessary, abnormal cells that disrupt the normal functions of the body"s organs regulate cell division, results in cancer.
