Why would one consent to political power. It is good to give up certain kinds of equality. State of nature is prior to society. Law of nature (reason) & reason tells us that one is not at liberty to do whatever they please & destroy yourself or another (in their life, liberty, health, or possessions) Each individual is in charge of its execution (can decide what is right or wrong and what appropriate punishment is) One body-united, majority decides, act for the will of the community, instability. We are obliged to obey if we are a part of the minority decision. a part of the united body. In the state of nature, there is a law of nature that says we ought not to cause harm (chapter 2) There is no established or known law in the state of nature to be a standard of right and wrong (chapter 9)
