Socrates is the main character in reading because plato wrote about him. 399-469 bc/4th or 5th century (70 years old) + he was put to death. An apology in the ancient greek does not mean to give an apology, it means to give a reasoned defense or an account for his actions. Socrates is considered to be the father of western philosophy. Athens is the location of it all, considered to be the first democracy which excluded poor people, women, slaves, and non-landowners (it was direct and participatory where everyone who is a citizen can help make decisions) Socrates introduces a rational method which has questions regarding assumptions that people made. He is corrupting the young (teaching them to question authority figures) Young people are formed with the values and beliefs of the political community. Socrates" philosophy puts him at odds with the political community so much so that they think he should be put to death.
