Detante was supposed to change the united states foreign policy so the united states can get out of the mess vietnam created for them in the international arena. Part of this was going back to strong point defense and expanding its scope a little bit. Detante was nixon"s updated version of the new look. Nixon wanted to focus a lot more on economics, which was playing to the united states strengths. Nixon believed the united states values were a cornerstone of leadership and we had to get back to our values to regain the trust of our allies. Nixon wanted negotiations and diplomacy to be the main point of contact between the united. States and the ussr rather than only having a military relationship. Sufficiency was another part of nixon"s foreign policy and was intended to stop a nuclear arms race and reverse nuclear proliferation. Nixon ran into problems with sufficiency starting at the salt i talks.
