What is going in inside the head, that translates into behavior intended to harm. Instrumental aggression: deliberative, strategic, hostile aggression, spontaneous, reactive. Hormonal effects- testosterone: animal studies, human studies (dabbs) Prisoner testosterone predicts degree of violence of the criminal offense. Testosterone differences in military members predicts trouble with the law, peer ratings of violence, etc. Testosterone differences predict between-fraternity differences on a variety of behaviors. Hormone treatments in sex-reassignment: f m show increases, m f show reductions. Medical testosterone treatments produced increases in male aggression in response to provocation. Relational aggression (f>m: bjorkqvists"s studies of children. Females more likely to act in indirect aggression than males. Males more likely to act in physical aggression than females. Whatever the biological preparation for aggression may be, actual levels of violence vary markedly across cultures. Cultural norms can promote an aggressive social climate or a distinctly non-aggressive climate. South murders > non-south (especially in argument-related murders)
