Deviance: refers to the violation of any norm. Crime: the violation of a norm written in law. Stigma: goffman referred to the stigma as characteristics that discredit people. If you go to a store the cashier is going to sell you your milk and not force you to buy soda. Social control: formal and informal means of enforcing a norm. Negative sanctions: the expression of disapproval for breaking a norms. This can be expressed through facial expressions, gossip, imprisonment and even death. Positive sanctions: reward or positive reaction for following the norms. This can be expressed through smiles and formal awards. Men born with an extra y chromosome were more likely to become criminals(xyy theory) Personality disorders: a personality disturbance of some sort causes individuals to violate social norms. From a sociologist"s standpoint they look at external factors they may contribute to the deviance such as socioeconomic status, education, and occupation.
