Document Summary

We will explore what it means to study statistics as well as the relationship between statistics and mathematics. Students will be introduced to a variety of statistical terminology. We will discuss the three ways to obtain information in statistics. Students will learn to differentiate between designed experiments and observational studies. Students will also be exposed to the basic principles of sampling and experimental design. It is also a field of study; for example, i am a statistician. It also can be a specific value (i. e. your gpa is a statistic). Statistics is the science of collecting, organizing, and interpreting data in the presence of variablility for the purpose of making decisions. In the examples above, we can explain some of the variability with other variables. In general, we attempt to explain variability through factors or predictors (the variables that we can manipulate). The underlying variable of interest is called the response variable (the variable we measure).
