{HW for next Thursday – check canvas for seating chart and grading groups and group
project contract/members/materials ----- HW for next Tuesday – Module 2}
ART
What does art covey and what is art – ideas about meaning; to make art is a skill;
expresses certain problems in society; expression of emotion; portrayal of reality;
beauty; can emotionally connect with
What is art – paint; sculpture; architecture; books; pics; dance; music;
In this class we look at what is called the fine arts (architecture, music, film, etc.) but
that doesn’t negate that something else can be artful (a passion you have that is creative
and evokes emotion)
What are esthetics – appearance; what we see
When it has esthetic value we are talking about what we deem beautiful
What is beautiful in regards to human form – everyone has their own idea of what they
think is beautiful  we get the idea of our ‘ideal’ female body from media
**esthetics depend on culture, generation, personal experience, what the dominant
culture looks like, our surroundings/circumstances**
What are the functions of art – to entertain (like can get
sad/boring/stressful/confusing/isolating)
Why is entertainment important – distracting; elicit emotion; bring people together;
make people think;
Germans thought art made people ‘mad’ or that it made you stupid
Drama = the text; Theatre = expression of text
Know this formula: A performs B for C in X
A actor
B drama text or thing
C audience
X designated space
Broader than theatre is the word performance  we are currently performing a cultural
script – we are performing student and in the role/space to be a god student we need to
take notes, be prepared, participate – we know this because this is what we have been
taught  violation of this script is getting up and leaving/talking on phone
What we deem as normal is based on our culture and violations of culture makes us
uncomfortable
Comprehension questions:
1. 5 ways dialogue functions – advances plot (plot = the events of story); sets the mood
and tone; how each character uses language to express their thoughts; provokes action;
expresses character
2. 3 tips for reading play – read slowly, picture what you can being played out in head, read
with a pencil

3. question of purpose of art people have debated for a long time – is it meant to be for
beauty or to education – purposes of art: social change/aggistaion, community building,
entertainment
art that is more for entertainment = comedy, movies,
art for education = documentaries
5. aristotles definition of purpose of drama – interpret world and awaken the soul and does
god of carnige do this – yes it reveals how anaimalistic people can be; play about universal
humans or a certain class of people – coveys what we think is universally true without
directly saying it – we tend to put our own race/identity on characters – cultural practice =
when it doesn’t specify we tend to picture white  certain behaviors, foods, words, are
racial/culturally specific
