THEATRE NOTES – ENVIRONMENT – THURSDAY, MARCH 3, 2016
Important Notes:
*THURSDAY BEFORE SPRING BREAK: NO CLASS – use this time
to work on group project
~~~ Environment ~~~
3 A’s of environment
1. Architecture
2. Atmosphere
3. Activity
The things on the stage have to relate to all 3 of these
Everyone works together to create environment
Determine the environment for the audience and let the activity
take place in that atmosphere
Creating an environment (in class activity)
Create a beach in this room
oArchitecture of beach/physical properties: a lot of sand
and water, flat and open, need more light (like a sunny
day on beach) – make it a yellow or orange warm light,
need sound – waves crashing, radio playing (beach boys),
temperature - increased heat, smell – sunscreen, coconut
tanning lotion, need people/beach activity – people
playing with beach ball, sun-tanning, play in the sand,
read book on beach, costume – swim-trunks, sunglasses,
beach-bag, towel, water bottle, snacks
oHow to get more interactive w/ audience – fill room with
sand and gave everyone towels, beach ball going around
everyone, actors walk on stage thru the audience – makes
audience part of architecture, activity
oTotally immersive play on beach – actually go to a beach
for the play
OR What if you were creating a forest: physical properties –
trees, people become trees, closed and crowded/packed
environment, forest sounds/storms, turn down/out the lights,
flashlight, light face with flashlight and tell ghost story (we
aren’t used to things lit from underneath), focus light on
actress/have it follow her around to distinguish characters from
tree
