Document Summary
Writing tool #4: commas are your friend. Ex: lets eat children/ let"s eat, children. Comma = pause in a sentence or a shift of emphasis. To set off elements of a sentence. To separate elements listed in a series. To separate elements that could be confusing if run together. Use a comma after an introductory word or a word that introduces the main message of a sentence. Not essential to the meaning of the sentence. Define or distinguish the elements they modify. They are essential to the meaning of the sentence. They are not set off by commas. Words that form a bridge to connect two elements in a sentence. Use two commas to interpret the main flow of the sentence. Could stand alone as a sentence (makes sense on its own) If we join these clauses into one sentence, we need a coordinating conjunction, and a comma before it.
