Document Summary

Is measure of uncertainty, range of time when it could have happened. Microscopic plant remains in sediments, pottery or stone tools. Basics of the lecture - food residues in pottery, diets of ancient woodland peoples. Dating organic materials materials from the ocean or deep lakes(ex shellfish, aquatic plants) can be problematic because when alive, organisms are taking in very old, 14 c - depleted co2. Radiocarbon dating is weird and has a lot of restrictions. Influence radiocarbon dates on things from diff environments. Middle-level theory helps archist determine how artifacts were useful. Taphonomy - how sites form; natural things distribute artifacts, etc. Ethnoarch - compare living group w/ ancient ones. Relational analogy - inuit hunter-gatherer and michigander hunter-gatherers; climate and subsistence. Formal analogy - arch pointy things -> spears or arrows -> hunting or warfare. All relational = formal w/ a strong relation and good explanation.
