Document Summary

Gender roles are tasks and activities assigned to the sexes. They vary with their environment, economy, adaptive strategy, and types of political and religious systems. Recurrent gender patterns are expressed and reinforce through religious beliefs and practices, languages, political and economic structures, and social interactions. Universally expressed through adornment and comportment. (example; in domestic activities, female labor dominates, while in extradomestic activities, male labor dominates; this is partly due to female reproductive strategies. ) This is not universal, (e. g. , kung hunter-gatherers; women in the u. s. military and firefighting. ) Gender stratification are the ways gendered activities and attributes are related to the unequal distribution of resources, prestige, and power in a society. Roughly equal contribution to subsistence by men and women correlates with decreased gender stratification. As women"s contributions to subsistence become differentially high or low, gender stratification increases. It is lower when domestic and public spheres are not clearly distinguished.
