Ash clogs jet engines heat melts ash, which then cools on turbine blades, stopping them. Northern pacific and alaska are particularly dangerous. Reduce power to lower engine temperature to reduce ash melting. 2010 iceland eruption (eyjafjallajokull glacier volcano, iceland) Silica content rose in april probably erupting magma that had time to change composition while in a magma chamber: maybe 10% (?) of iceland"s volcanoes have high(er) silica eruptions. Also contact of high temperature magma with ice resulted in vaporization of ice and explosive eruptions. Eruptions of this sort seem to occur every 100-200 years at some of these volcanoes. Plume was mainly ash and low in the atmosphere (< 35,000 ft. )
