Managers are controlled, regulated and influenced by stockholders, owners, suppliers and regulators. First-line managers and supervisors technical core responsibilities. General manager responsible for all activities in the unit. Functional manager responsible for only one of the organizational activity (ex: bar manager, kitchen manager, dining room manager) Leader responsible for directing and motivating the staf. Liaison must deal efectively with people inside and outside the organization and must be able to coordinate the interrelated activities. Entrepreneur manager is the initiator of change. Disturbance handler must be able to respond to situations that occur beyond the manager"s control. Technical skills must know methods and techniques. Human or interpersonal skills must be able to work with and communicate with people. Conceptual skills must be able to see how all of the various parts of the organization contribute to the success of the whole organization. Five basic management functions: planning, organizing, staffing, leading, controlling.
