Belief that any expanded territory should be free territory. Wanted new territory to be free territory; not against slavery. Slave society organized the region socially and economically. Very few options for free white laborers w/out the money for enslaved labor. Pro-slavery ideals spread across class levels felt that the new territories would provide them the opportunity to become wealthy plantation owners. Place for the new immigrants coming into the american north to strike out and find new land. Becomes land where both regions work out their differences. Gold rush- rapid expansion resulting in states applying for statehood. Debate of slave states versus free states. Election of 1856: the republican challenge to power. Democratic party is presented with its first major opposition power. Republican party: created out of fragmented political parties.
