4 different ways of mapping empire: geographic. Idea of yourself as a subject, you as a part of a shared experience, how you relate the subject to the ideology. European empires controlled 85% of the earth in 1914: from 1815 to 1914, european control of the earth expanded from 35% to 85% Orientalism, which describes writing about asia and the middle east, edward said describes as a discourse. Orientalism reinforced, and was reinforced by, the certain knowledge that europe or the west literally commanded the vastly greater part of the earth"s surface. Every continent was effected, none more so than africa and asia. British and the french; allies and partners in some things, in others they were hostile rivals. Orientalism as a discourse: the interchange between the academic and the imaginative. Orient used to include everything from morocco to japan. Imaginative: art developed by europeans who traveled/read books/told stories from their imagination of the middle east.
