Workers program: laborers treated much better during war, when they were needed, caused a lot of racism and segregation. 1948 british nationality act: subjects into citizens (west indians etc. Islands), and former british india: encouraged of cials to make it more dif cult to leave, 200,000 from commonwealth in the uk by 1958, recession in 1958- gave them an excuse to control immigration. 1956: first large in ux from former british india, india, pakistan, bangladesh. Racist anti-immigrant political parties gain some ground: held rallies in immigrant neighborhoods, indian man was murdered. Commonwealth immigration act, 1962: prospective migrants needed to apply for a employment voucher, gave white employers the upper hand, immigrants protested, didn"t do much to stem off immigration; people came to join their family members.
