ISS210 - Lecture 2: Power, Society, & Social Science - Chapter 1
Power:
● Power - capacity to affect the conduct of others through the real / threatened use of
rewards and punishments
○ power can only be had when relationships exist between groups
○ power depends on access to resources
○ power bases (resources) are interdependent. when we have access to one, it is
much easier to have access to the others, and it goes both ways.
Elites v Masses:
● elites are those who have power, and masses are everyone else.
● three levels of society: macro, meso and micro.
Legitimacy
● Legitimacy - when a source of power is legitimate, people will be more likely to submit
to it.
Authority: power that is exercised legitimately
● Symbols of authority:
○ the way people dress
○ Badge
○ a podium
Three sources of legitimacy:
1. Tradition – the way things have always been
2. Charisma –how sooth soeoe is. How well the lead ad attract a audiece
3. Legality (rational-legal authority)
● Institutional power
○ power is exercised in large institutions
● Social structure
○ defined as how societies deal with challenges they face
○ there are social structures at the macro level and at the micro level
*micro level structures: statuses & roles.
● Statuses: ascribed and achieved. These are everything that you are.
