Revolutionary era=> conscious devotion to freedom: but continued enslavement of africans. Northern leaders weren"t willing to endanger the union. Failure of powerful southern leadership to participate in emancipation: had complex motives, support might have determined their political careers. Washington was opposed to slavery but refused to endorse emancipation. So he tried to treat his slaves humanely. He didn"t want to free his slaves because that might further separate the north and the south. Jefferson and madison=> thought blacks were inferior. Thought emancipation would succeed if: gradual plan of compensated emancipation, systematic colonization of the freed people apart from the us, slaves would have to be replaced by white immigrant labor from europe. Jefferson=> push emancipation back=> future generations can deal with: the status quo should continue. Emancipate all slaves born after the act. Have them grow up and be taught and cared for.
