LIN 291 Lecture Notes - Lecture 5: Herd Mentality, Great White Shark, Estrous Cycle
Document Summary
Domestication- the process of selectively breeding tamed wild animals to fit our needs. Taming- conditioning a wile animal to have a positive disposition towards humans. Domestication of plants and animals leads to sedentary lifestyle, leading to development of culture/science/warfare/etc. Arguments that dogs don"t have language: mini debate. There"s a difference between basic instincts that allowing for group formation , like assigning meaning to some rudimentary symbols like body language, and neurological capacity for language. We have to intensely train them to respond to cues. The fact that dogs can only respond to tone of voice proves they"re not tracking the words. There"s no systematic, estbalished body language that has been observed by studies. For commensal and prey animals, most likely didn"t imagine domesticated consequence, but rather constant evolutionary interaction with them ex. Cattle: uneven distribution of domestication candidates - 13/14 of candidates all came from eurasia.
