PKG 101 Lecture 5: 5-4
Document Summary
Foil is a thin sheet of metal that comes in sheets or rolls. Today, nearly all of the foil used for packaging is made of aluminum, but there is a small amount of tinfoil used for specialty items. Aluminum foil is available from 0. 00017 to 0. 0059 inch thicknesses and in various surface finishes and treatments. Foil is available in widths up to 72 inches in the u. s. Aluminum foil is considered to provide the ultimate flexible packaging barrier material, far superior to any plastic or paper, where protection from moisture or oxygen is required. Aluminum foil is also used for the attractive appearance of its reflective surface. Packages with a shiny appearance attract attention from shoppers, thus helping to sell the products. If the foil is used for its barrier properties alone, it is best to put it on the inside of the package or in between other materials in packaging material to protect it from damage.
