Document Summary
An individual"s characteristic pattern of thinking, feeling and acting. Freud was the first to hypothesize about the unconscious mind. According to freud, the mind was a collection of unconscious unacceptable thought, wishes, feelings, and memories. The mind is made up of three interactive parts. Id: a reservoir of unconscious psychic energy that strives to satisfy vasic sexual and aggressive drives, the id functions on the pleasure principle, demanding immediate gratification c. Together, freud"s theories about the unconscious mind and the methods of treatment that he developed represented a new way of thinking about psychology called psychoanalysis. Psychoanalysis attributed thoughts and actions to unconscious motives and conflicts and defined treatment as the process of exposing and interpreting unconscious tensions. In freud"s theory, personality development takes place through a variety of psychosexual stages, each stage focusing on different pleasure-sensitive areas of the body, called erogenous zones.
