PSY 101 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Edward B. Titchener, Psyccritiques, Wilhelm Wundt
Document Summary
Psychology is the science of behavior and mental processes. Behavior: any action of an organism that we can observe and record and many actions qualify. (ex: emotional responses) Mental processes: internal, subjective experiences, including sensations, perceptions, dreams, thoughts and feelings, as well as memories. We infer unobservable mental states such as feelings from observable behaviors. In this sense behavior is a window on the mind. Science: an approach to gaining understanding of the natural (physical) world through systematic observation. Anything metaphysical falls outside per view of science. Greeks made predictions starting in late 19th century. William wundt founded the first laboratory devoted to psychological research.
