Discussion Questions
1. "Between those who regard politics as a function of ethics and those who regard ethics as a
function of politics" (Carr 41).
2. The second reason "regard ethics as a function of politics" makes more sense to me because in
this case your good or bad thoughts/ideas affect politics as a whole and what you do could have a
positive or negative impact.
3. The doctrines of the "harmony of interests" and "the harmony of national interests" are that "In
pursuing his own interest, the individual pursues that of the community, and in promoting the
interest of the community he promotes his own" (Carr 42).
4. "The individual neither intends to promote the public interest, nor knows how much how much he
is prootig it…..he iteds oly his ow gai" Carr .
5. The collective goods problem is a tangible or intangible good, created by the members of a group,
that is available to all group members regardless of their individual contributions; participants can
gain by lowering their own contribution to the collective goof yet if too many participants do so,
the good cannot be provided. The problem of how to provide something that benefits all
members of a group regardless of what each member contributes to it. The principle of identity
may solve the collective goods problem by changing participants' preferences based on their
shared sense of belonging to a community. It does not rely on self interest, members of an
identity community care about the interests of others in that community enough to sacrifice their
own interests to benefit others.
6. Advantages the identity principle may pose toward solving the collective goods problem because
the members care more about the community then their own interests, disadvantages the
identity principle may pose towards solving the collective goods problem because it could be easy
to manipulate other members and pretend to not care about their own interests.
