Document Summary

Apical pattern- top to bottom, the root apex to the tip of the root, or the tip of the plant to the plant apex. Funiculus- connects the seed to the parent cell. Epigeous- a growth structure where the cotyledons grow above ground. Hypogeous- a growth structure where the cotyledons are below ground. Epidermis: epidermal cells, root hairs, bulliform cells, guard cells, trichomes. Vascular: xylem, vessel elements, tracheids, parendama, fibers, phloem, sieve tube elements, companion cells, parenchyma, fibers. Parenchyma: parenchyma-totipotency-has the ability to revert back to meristem cells. Sclerenchyma- simple tissue, has a thick cells wall: fibers, sclereids-used for support and strength. Collenchyma: collenchyma-flexible underneath the epidermis, cell wall thickness varies. Determinant- no capacity for new cells inside the vascular bundles. Indeterminate- has the capacity for new cells in vascular bundles. Uses companion cells for metabolism and loading the sieve tube and sieve plate. *guard cells are the only epidermal cells with choloroplasts*
