Choral odes were song and dance numbers. Disney"s hercules was not far off from traditional greek theatre. 1927 show boat: first book musical, both dialogue and musical numbers moved the action of the story forward. Why do we sing in musicals: entertainment, express emotions. 1943 oklahoma: game changer, dance, dialogue, and song are all used to tell the same story, further moved towards creating a realistic world on stage, characters moved in and out of song naturally. Rogers and hammerstein: 1940"s and 1950"s, golden age of musical theatre, heartening and cheerful songs, not simply romantic comedies of early musical theatre.
