Treatment: reading: prior reading history and interest. Survey type and amount of reading prior to injury. Generally, treatment most effective for previously good readers. Otherwise, more emphasis on aud comp, speaking skills. Survival reading- ranking of pt"s interests: identify ability level. Assess reading capacity- (vocabulary and complexity level) and reading rate. Also where breakdown occurs (word, sentence, paragraph) Treatment: reading (cont. : survival reading skills. Primary: mail, checkbook, medicine labels, maps phone book, calendar, product labels. Secondary: messages, signs, newspapers, magazines tv guide, menu, books: build sight vocabulary- especially for critical words (names, address, warnings) Goal is to re-establish association of visual/auditory image to printed word: develop hierarchy of complexity. Matching words to: objects, photos, drawings, auditory stimuli. Emphasize comprehension, not oral reading (not very familiar task) Treatment: reading (cont. : avoid phonic approach (sounding out words) for dysarthria, aos, and auditory processing impairments. Difficulties separating receptive (reading) from production errors: use stimulus manipulations.
