C_S_D 1060 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Neurolinguistics, Sociolinguistics, Psycholinguistics
Document Summary
Communication = process of encoding, transmitting, and decoding signals to exchange information and ideas between the participants. Language = a socially shared code or conventional system for representing concepts through the use of arbitrary symbols and rule-governed combinations of those symbols. It allows us to transmit information and ideas about things that are not present in the here and now . One way of seeing the importance of language to humans is looking at cases where language becomes disordered. Understand the most fundamental properties of human language. Recognize how languages are alike (universals) and how they differ from one another. Understand the basic terminology used to study and analyze languages. Understand how language is studied in different fields. Neurolinguistics: the study of the relationship between language and the brain. Morphology: the analysis of the structure of words. Syntax: the analysis of the structure of phrases and sentences. Semantics: the study of the meanings of words, phases and sentences.
