ECONOM 1051 Lecture Notes - Soil Texture
Document Summary
Running water- makes planet unique in solar system. Stream flow: rainfall intensity - amount of precipitation in a given unit of time, infiltration capacity - amount of rainfall that can be absorbed into the ground. Controlled by intensity and duration of rainfall, prior wetted condition of soil, soil texture, shape of land, nature of vegetative cover. Rainfall intensity > infiltration capacity => running water (runoff)- Determining a stream"s velocity: gradient (slope of stream channel, shape, size and roughness of channel, stream"s discharge. ***gradient and roughness generally decrease downstream while width, depth, discharge and velocity increase**: transporting sediment- transported materials are known as stream load, ways to transport, diminished load- transport sediment in solution. Depositing sediment-deposit occurs when velocity is slowed and competence is reduced: stream deposits are called alluvium, channel deposits- bars, braided streams, deltas, alluvial fans. 2: natural levees- form parallel to the stream (halved by successive floods flood-plains deposits over many years)
