Document Summary

Prescriptive- prescribe or believe one certain english is the right english. Descriptive- describe or believes that there can be multiple englishes. The scientific method should be used to det language in the dictionary. When your knee hurts, only you can feel it, so describing pain is hard because it has a subjective, internal meaning that only you can understand. Your color green is different from your neighbors green . Words have certain meanings because we were taught to associate them with certain things--imposed at a young age. If we take away the correct english, nobody will understand each other (a tree could be a tree or a golf ball) Language is bonded to social issues (such as class, race, sex, morality, equality money, etc) Authoritative textbooks are based on what people actually do---so not really prescriptive. Ex: those mushrooms are poisonous vs he is allergic to this medication .
