Initiation, development & out come of an infectious disease. Pasteur uses a swan-neck flask to show that bacteria are not the result of spontaneous generation. Pasteur shows that certain organisms can grow anaerobically. Koch develops solid growth media - allows pure culture of bacteria. Koch demonstrates the principle of disease transmission in rabbits. Koch applies the scientific method to the study of infection: koch"s. The suspected microbe must be observed in all cases of the disease: isolate. The suspected microbe must be isolated and grown in pure culture: inoculate. The isolated microbe must cause the same disease when inoculated into a healthy animal: recover. The same microbe must be recovered from the newly infected animal. Some pathogens cannot be grown in pure culture ex. Mycobacterium leprae (hansen"s disease or leprosy), viral agents. Some diseases are caused by a combination of pathogens - ex. Applying koch"s postulates to human specific pathogens may be unethical ex.
