PLNT_S 2125 Lecture Notes - Lecture 1: Cell Wall, Protoplast, Hemicellulose
Document Summary
Plants perform many different functions in various plant structures: different cells do different things, different structures do different things, leaf tissue vs. stem tissue vs. root tissue. Protoplast: term for all of the living things inside the cell, plasma membrane and all of the organelles, doesn"t include cell wall, 60-70% protein by weight, all of the stuff inside the cell. Wall is outside the cell: can be divided into the cytoplasm and the cytosol. Cytoplasm is the protoplast minus the nucleus. Cytosol is the liquid matrix inside the cell: surrounds and bathes organelles, solvent for many macro molecules. Cell wall: fibrous wall surrounding protoplast, function. Support for stems and leaves: grows with cell expansion and maturation. Eventually becomes cross linked with other cell walls and limits growth. Becomes more rigid at maturation: water pressure from vacuole is supported by the wall, three major components for primary cell walls.
