Monday, September 17, 2012 Public Opinion What is public opinion? • Public Opinion – A collection of individual opinions • Individual opinions are influenced by a lot of things: o Political ideology o Beliefs o Values o Attitudes • In a representative democracy, public opinion is an important thing to consider o Public opinion should be influential being it is the definition of a representative democracy  Public Opinion In Normative Perspective • Normative – How things ought to be • Our system has a conflict between leadership and representation o We want our elected officials to do what WE want, but we also want them to have leadership • Delegate – Makes their decisions based on what they think people want (public opinion) • Trustee – Makes their decisions based on what they think is right (their own judgment) • Politicos – A mix between the two: Pays attention to public opinion when they think it is important, and  then make their own decisions
