Why do people support them? • They address ideas that the major parties are ignoring, and sometimes popularize those ideas o Allow citizens to affect the election and to draw attention away from the major parties o Forces the major parties to respond o New positions, new policies o Attention is given to new issues • They give people a way to express their discontent with the two major parties without violence • They are an unofficial part of system and balances o They’re a check on the two major parties o A way for us to hold the Democrats and Republicans accountable  C. Functions • WON’T EVER HAPPEN: We will have three or four strong parties operating at the same time  Campaigns and Elections 1. We want an election free of fraud 2. Because this is a representative democracy, there ought to be good voter turnout o What is a good voter turnout?  65% ­ represents a population that WANTS to participate in the process 3. Informational o A campaign should be informational, and we should have learned about the candidate  The candidates have to talk about the issues  You have to have somebody to tell us what the candidates are
