PSCYH 1000: Thursday, January 23 Introduction to Psychology I.  Definition of Psychology  ○ The scientific study of behavior and mental processes ■ 3 important parts: ● Behavior ○ Actions, overt behavior ● Mental processes ○ Thoughts ■ Beliefs, attitudes ○ Feelings ■ Anger, jealousy, etc. ○ Hypothetical constructs ■ Learning, motivation personality, etc. ■ We assume it’s there ● Scientific ○ Objective, standardized methods to collect data ○ Not a body of knowledge, it is an approach to knowing ○ Psychology as a Science  ■ In science, we abandon relying on: ● Opinions of others ● Intuitions  ● Common sense  ■ all three are sometimes wrong, but we don’t know why ■ find out which explanations fit the evidence or data ○ common sense ■ most of us trust our gut intuitions about how the world works II.  Contemporary Psychological Perspectives  ○ 2 pre­contemporary perspectives: ■ structuralism ● wundt and titchner  ● identify the most basic elements of psychological experience ■ functionalism ● james ● understand the adaptive purposes of psychological characteristics ○ 5 contemporary perspectives ■ cognitive ● piaget and neisser ● focuses on the mental processes involved in a different aspect of  thinking ● how we process, store, and retrieve information ○ ex: Successes vs. failures ■ behavio
