Social patterns emerge by factors in which individuals have little control over. Anomie strain theories: anomie: state of normlessness where society fails to effectively regulate the expectations or behaviors of its members, durkheim- afraid of anomie, caused by decreased integration leading to changes in social norm. Core assumption: social order is the product of cohesive set of norms, norms are shared by society and its members, response to deviance is to maintain order. Old norms no longer applied and unclear expectations: durkheim thought that slow social change was the way to implement change. As the those in opposition to new social order die, those who grew up with the this new norm raise the next generation, that"s when the majority of people are on the same page. Bloward and ohlin differential opportunity theory: innovation not equally available to all, structured availability to illegitimate means, understand motivatiosn and availability of opportunities to learn about and participate in deviancy, behaviors and deviant.
