BIOL 100 Lecture Notes - Lecture 3: Decomposer, Autotroph, Cytoplasm
Document Summary
3 groups in which all organisms fit. Fluid structure that gives the cell shape. Regulates what can go in and out of the cell. Genetic information not contained in a nucleus. Evolved from prokaryotic cells 2 billion years ago. When it moves it looks like it has no purpose (circles) Slug like - looks like a slug and moves very slowly. Does everything, but doesn"t do anything extremely well. Getting energy (or food) from within themselves. Uses light energy or inorganic chemicals to produce molecules required. Getting energy (or food) from another source. Consumes other living thing to meet their energy requirements. One of the most abundant cell types. Live in all habitats but can also inhabit extreme environments. Acidic, saline, very high temperatures, oxygen free, digestive tracts of animals. Hasn"t been link to any human diseases. Play an important role in chemical cycling. Some produce methane which can be collected and used as an energy source.
