Document Summary

The most serious police stressor is the organization. Influence of police policies and decision-making by politics and other external influences. The hierarchical bureaucratic structure not conducive to contemporary policing. Paramilitary organizational structures and the war on crime alienate police officers. Professionalism among police officers is inhibited by police organizational issues - solutions focus on officers, not the system. No earnest effort to aid police officers in preventing stress. American police managers are strongly influenced by forces outside of the profession. Hiring standards, training, enforcement protocols, discipline processes and investigations, use of force, investigation strategies, service delivery strategies. The police are accountable to their communities, taxpayers and public officials. The primary american police mandate is to provide public safety services, including crime control, while guaranteeing individual human rights, especially due process rights. For policing in a democratic society to be effective, it must be considered legitimate by the vast majority of the people.
