Document Summary

In this country, individual freedom and rights are balanced with the need to establish and maintain order. We have created the criminal justice system in an effort to live in a peaceful and orderly society. Textbook states that citizens enter into a social contract with the criminal justice system and each other that states that for everyone to receive justice each person must relinquish some freedom. Were not going to try to right the wrongs by ourselves. We determine standards and responsibility with the criminal justice system. Defines a social contract as being an arrangement wherein people give up some of their personal freedoms in order to increase the freedom of society as a whole. This does not mean that the police are left unchecked, society has a right to spell out the criteria by which such judgments are made.
