All talk formats with live listener call-ins became popular by 1980s. 1996 telecommunication act rolled back regulations on radio industry that encouraged diverse ownership. This allowed companies to own unlimited amount of stations, creating industry consolidation. Ex clear channel/ iheart radio peaked with 120 stations in 2005. New corporate radio chains cut costs by streamlining operations. A person records a phrase and it is sent to stations around the country. Sirius xm (merged 2009) satellite radio: paid subscription model, clearer sound, more listening options, no a, no fcc indecency rules. Other new competitors: internet radio, music streaming services, podcasts. Anthology: new story and characters for each installment (black mirror) Episodic/chapter: continuing characters, new story each episode (big bang theory, ncis) Serial: continuing story and characters (scandal, empire, the walking dead) Broadcast tv borrowed its structure directly from radio. Local stations affiliate with national networks (nbc, cbs, abc)
