Document Summary

Lecture #13 topics: thorax, thorax spaces, thoracic skeleton revisited, vessels of the thoracic wall. 6: pleural membranes, cavity, pleural recesses, thoracic movement in ventilation, muscles of the thoracic wall, diaphragm, accessory muscles of ventilation. The superior limit of the thoracic cavity is the plane of the superior thoracic aperture. Ribs 1-7 are true ribs: they have costal cartilage joints that attach to sternum. Ribs 8-10 are false ribs: the costal carriage joints attach to costal margin. 11-12: oating ribs they don"t join with anything. suspended by muscles and fascia. do not participate in respiration. protect kidneys and spleen. #12 has attachment to diaphragm. Shows that the thorax contains 3 separate spaces: left and right pulmonary cavity and the mediastinum, and the pleural cavity. Pneumothorax is divided into the simple and tension pneumothorax. The tension pneumothorax is diagnosed radiologically when the mediastinum is displaced to the contralateral side and there is inferior displacement of the ipsilateral hemidiaphragm.
